Mixed fortunes
There were mixed fortunes for Tenby’s men’s teams over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Tenby team travelled to play Loughor in the second knockout round of the Carruthers Shield, and what a nail-biter it proved to be, going down to the very last wood before the visitors squeezed through by a single shot, 76-75.
They now go on to meet competition favourites and old adversaries RTB Ebbw Vale in the next round at home on July 23. Tenby accounted for RTB in a thrilling semi-final clash at Llandod last year and will be hoping to dash their visitors’ hopes again this year.
Meanwhile, the Five Arches also had a tough couple of days in the league.
On Saturday, they entertained Pembroke Dock at the Sutton Street green and, although having their noses in front for much of the match, eventually succumbed by 78 shots to 65, winning on one rink and drawing on another to pick up three points.
There was no such return of points at Haverfordwest the next day, though, where, despite a spiritied display, a side much depleted by withdrawals and absentees lost heavily to the current league leaders by 112 shots to 44.
HAVERFORDWEST TASKER 2 pts.
TENBY ARCHES
LADIES 4
This game finished with one rink winning comfortably and the other losing heavily on a difficult playing surface at Haverfordwest. With a superior shot count overall, the Tenby ladies returned home with another four league points to keep them in contention at the top of the table.
Helen skipped the rink of Meryl, Jan and Gerry and after winning the first end were never able to get into the game. At the midway stage, they had a 10 shots deficit and their form did not improve, finally losing 27 shots to 13.
On the outside rink, skip Alison was supported by Lynn, Katie and Jo, who were having a much better day than Helen’s quartet. Eleven-year-old Katie Dickinson was playing her first league game for the Arches ladies and what a game she had. Once she switched her play from the backhand to her forehand, she consistently got woods close to the jack and helped her rink to an impressive 33 shots to nine win, which included a six shots haul on the penultimate end. Well done Katie and the ladies for helping you through this first game.
The 46 shots to 36 win was another high scoring game for the Tenby Arches Ladies, who are sponsored by Tenby House Hotel.
