Following the huge success of last year’s Sunset Cinema, The Torch Theatre present a second season of classic films screened outdoors at sunset in seven beautiful Pembrokeshire locations.

The season opens on Tuesday, August 11, with Back To The Future, screened in The Torch’s home town of Milford Haven at the Marina. The time travelling classic starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd has become one of the most successful movie franchises ever.

Next up on Thursday, August 13, is Ghostbusters, screened in the grounds of Picton Castle in Haverfordwest. Situated close to the Cleddau Estuary (known locally as the ‘hidden waterway’), the grounds comprise 40 acres of some of the most impressive woodland gardens in West Wales.

On Friday, August 14, at 2 pm, the magnificent Carew Castle will screen Maleficent. With a history spanning 2,000 years, Carew Castle is set in a stunning location, overlooking a 23-acre millpond - the perfect location for family favourite Maleficent. As a beautiful young woman of pure heart, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) has an idyllic life in a forest kingdom. When an invading army threatens the land, Maleficent rises up to become its fiercest protector. However, a terrible betrayal hardens her heart and twists her into a creature bent on revenge.

Later that evening at sunset, Carew Castle will also screen major Box Office hit Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. When Robin (Kevin Costner) and his Moorish companion (Morgan Freeman) come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw…

On Tuesday, August 18, the classic Grease will be screened at Noble Court Holiday Park, Narberth, which is set in 40 acres in the heart of Pembrokeshire countryside - the ideal outdoor location for the 1978 American musical film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

On Wednesday, August 19, Baz Luhrmann’s heady musical Moulin Rouge will be screened at the Stackpole Walled Gardens in the Stackpole Estate near Pembroke. The beautiful Stackpole Estate is a National Trust property which lies within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and consists of 12 square kilometres of farmland, lakes, woodland, beaches and cliffs. Then on Thursday, August 20, the gardens will screen one of the most popular rom-coms of all time, Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.

Hilton Court in Haverfordwest, a ‘hidden Eden’ in the heart of Pembrokeshire’s National Park, will play host to The Blues Brothers on Friday, August 21. The 1980 musical comedy film starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd features musical numbers by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and John Lee Hooker, and has become a timeless cult classic.

Rounding off the season, Pembroke Castle will show Dracula on Saturday, August 22. The birth place of Henry VII, the castle is steeped in British history. It will be the 1958 Dracula that will be screened - arguably the definitive Dracula film. On a search for his missing friend Jonathan Harker, vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) is led to Count Dracula’s (Christopher Lee) castle. Upon arriving, Van Helsing finds an undead Harker in Dracula’s crypt and discovers that the count’s next target is Harker’s ailing fiancée, Lucy Holmwood. With the help of her brother Arthur, Van Helsing struggles to protect Lucy and put an end to Count Dracula’s parasitic reign of terror.

Artistic director of The Torch, Peter Doran, comments: “I don’t think any of us anticipated the success of last year’s sunset cinema, but it was truly amazing! If anyone experiences a success, the best way forward is to build on it and that’s what we hope to do this year - seven superb venues, nine classic film titles. Outdoor cinema is the new craze in the cinema industry and The Torch are leading the way within Wales. We are very grateful to Film Hub Cymru and the British Film Institute for their support.”

The Torch Theatre’s Sunset Cinema season runs August 11-22. ‘Doors’ open for each screening at 7 pm, with the films starting as soon as the sun has gone down - approx. 9.30 pm (except Maleficent).
