A second ‘beach friendly wheelchair’ has been secured for Tenby it was announced this week.
Town councillors recently highlighted the need for the resort to become a more ‘wheelchair friendly’ as many of the town’s beaches were difficult to access for disabled and elderly people, with Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall announcing that following a meeting with Pembrokeshire County Council’s access officer Alan Hunt, a beach friendly wheelchair would now be introduced at Castle Beach down by the harbour area.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Laurence Blackhall told his fellow colleagues that a second wheelchair had now been secured for the North Beach, and hopefully there would be more to follow for other beach areas across the town.
“We are very grateful to the owners of the cafe on the North Walk who have agreed to store the wheelchair for North Beach, and of course Mike at the Dennis Cafe who had previously agreed to facilitate storage for the one for Castle Beach,” said the town clerk Andrew Davies.
“We are hoping to get these wheelchairs delivered before the end of the month,” he added.
Clr. Mrs. Skyrme-Blackhall previously said that it was the first step for Tenby to encourage disabled and elderly people to enjoy the ‘glorious Blue Flag beaches’ that the resort had to offer by making them more accessible, and that the town council were also going to look at beach wheelchairs designed for children too.
Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane said that it was not the case that Tenby had neglected the issue, but had tried previously to introduce beech friendly wheelchairs for the resort, and been unsuccessful due to storage issues.
