Barbara Cookson, affectionately known as ‘Babs’, of James Park, Kilgetty, has celebrated her 100th Birthday this month.

Barbara was born and brought up in Sheffield and loves to tell stories of her days as a cinema usherette and milk lady in Sheffield. Having joined the Wrens during the Secondnd World War, she was posted to Saundersfoot after initial training in Blundell Sands, near Liverpool. 

It was while stationed at Saundersfoot that Barbara met Marine Frank Cookson. They married in 1943 and remained in Saundersfoot after the war. Frank was a Carpenter and Joiner and together they built a home on Sandyhill Road. 

Whilst bringing up their two sons, Jeffrey and Frank, Barbara did Bed and Breakfast and summer letting. They moved to Kilgetty in 1991 and sadly Frank died in 2001. 

Barbara still talks fondly of their annual holidays to Southport and enjoys visits from her four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was delighted to receive a beautiful card from the King and Queen congratulating her on this ‘special occasion’.
