An experienced Pembroke RFC Tigers combination played Narberth in the first match under the new floodlights at Crickmarren last Friday night, in mild, breezy, dry conditions. A large crowd had turned up and they were thoroughly entertained by two sides determined to play open rugby. The visitors started very strongly with their pacey backs feeding off quick ball from their industrious forwards to score four, unanswered, well crafted tries in the first quarter to establish a big lead. The home side then rallied to score the only try of a well fought second quarter. The home side struck first just minutes into the second half and again after sixteen minutes. But the Otters re-established their dominance with a further three tries to end up worthy winners by 17-39. Both sides were applauded from the field for a very entertaining match, by a very appreciative crowd.

Pembroke’s First XV will be playing Cardigan away tonight, KO 7pm, in the Pembs KO Plate, which has been introduced into the domestic calendar this season by the District H organisers.

The First XV entertained Aberystwyth last Saturday in very breezy, dry, mild, conditions, in front of a healthy crowd; the club thanks Richard and Joey Jones, with Family and friends, and Kevin Watts for their sponsorship. Aber’s record to date was a mixed one, with wins at home and on the road, and some losses at home. Pembroke’s forwards performed really well and matched a determined Aber pack for long periods, but Aber’s speedy, skilful backs proved the difference against a makeshift home line. Six tries by the visitors saw them lead by 7-38 at the break and their dominance continued second half with a further five tries. Pembroke scored two excellent tries, but the visitors proved too capable and ended up 19-73 winners. Try scorers for the home side were Arran Williams, Luke Alderwick and sub prop Jamie Brayford.

The Panthers match away at Cwmavon/Tondu last Sunday was cancelled by the opposition, but they are due to play at home this Sunday, KO 2.30pm, against Tondu in the WRU Women’s National Cup competition. Presently the Tigers and Youth have no games, whilst the Juniors’ will be back out in force on Sunday.

On December 10, the First XV are due to play Felinfoel at home; the whole day will be a tribute to the late Phil Bennett, who was a frequent visitor. The club will be fundraising in many ways and all of the proceeds donated in his honour to a charity nominated by Phil’s wife Pat.

November 26 is Ladies Night at the club, December 2 there’s a Quiz Night starting at 7.15pm and tickets will go on sale shortly for the New Year’s Eve Party, which features two marvellously entertaining vocalists and lots of music.
