Huge congratulations to Harrison Duckett (seen right) who last weekend earned his first Welsh cap playing against Ireland Under 18s at Cardigan Golf Club.
Harrison produced a fine display of golf, winning all three of his matches and helping Wales to a memorable 12.5-7.5 win, whilst also becoming the joint top point scorer. A fantastic achievement in his first international match.
Saturday provided a cold and windy morning where Harrison went out second in the singles matches. One down through six holes, he looked on the ropes, but steadied the ship with a string of good pars to level the match and take a two-hole lead after 13 holes.
What can only be described as an incredible series of shots on two of the course’s toughest holes saw Harrison stiff two long iron shots to make birdies on 14 and 15 to take the match 4 and 3.
In the afternoon foursomes, Harrison was paired with Thomas Matthews (Oswestry Golf Club) and, with both boys full of confidence from their morning wins, it was going to take a strong Irish duo to beat them.
However, some magical short game shots from Harrison and long and accurate driving from Thomas were needed to keep them in the game early on. All-square through six, again a string of strong pars in windy conditions allowed the pair to pull away to two up after 12. A poor chip and missed putt on 13, followed by an incredible Irish birdie on 14, brought the match to one up to Wales and a tense finish was on the cards.
Buoyed from their morning wins, the boys played beautifully over the next two holes to register a 2 and 1 win.
An early start on Sunday and it was singles matches again. Harrison repeated his strong display from Saturday, finding a high percentage of fairways/greens in regulation and putting beautifully.
By his own admission, the match should have been completed after 15 holes, but a fine display from his opponent saw the match go to the last, where after a nervy few closing shots, Harrison eventually held his nerve to win his third point for Wales and finish the meeting undefeated.
Wales took the Cardigan Trophy by a margin of 12.5-7.5.
Following play, Harrison wished to thank everyone for their support, Wales Golf for the opportunity and most importantly his Mum and Dad for everything they have done for him.
Everyone here at Trefloyne Manor is extremely proud of Harrison’s achievements to date and would like to wish him every success for the busy season ahead.
Next up for Harrison is the coveted Duncan Putter at Southerndown Golf Club played over the Easter week
