Tenby hosted their long standing friends from Ashburnham to compete for The Putter. This was the 126th consecutive annual match between the two historic clubs – a record for inter-club fixtures in Wales.
The Pembrey club brought a strong side to Tenby with a view to regaining The Putter which they had not held for 10 years or so. A very tight match ensued with most games being very close.
Off top for the home side were Captain Mick Seal and Secretary Dave Hancock who beat Ashburnham skipper Rob Stevens and his partner Vince Truby.
Martin Morris and Gary McNeilly were too good for Jamie Thomas and Gareth Jenkins. Idwal David and Tony Rogers went down to Phil Hall and Julian Nicholls. Jerry Whitehouse and Dave Blackmore halved with Kevin Hill and Tony Evans. Alan Sayers and John Richards also halved with Huw Dixon and Simon Edwards. Brian Jones and Gareth Davies lost to Simon Gravelle and Rob Saunders. The magnificent Gethin Evans and his partner Richard Ormond defeated Julian Ellis and Steve Adams.
Derek Cole and Ross James called it a half with Leo Meaney and Geoff Estcourt after the latter fell ill on the course. Fortunately he is now fine.
In the last rubber Keith Hubbard and David Lamb lost to Nick Watson and Nick Heath.
Therefore the match was halved 4.5 to 4.5 games each. Consequently, Tenby retain The Putter at least until they visit Ashburnham next year.
