Amroth and Saundersfoot community councils will be unveiling a 14’ by 7’ sculpture of a sea bass at the end of the month, as the second part of the ‘Turning the Tide on Plastics’ project.

The scuplture will be unveiled by the flag-pole in Amroth on Friday, June 29, at 12 noon.

To date all food outlet facilities in Amroth and Saundersfoot have signed up to the ‘Clean Seas’ pledge to reduce single use plastics across Saundersfoot Bay; and each has been awarded a kite mark to put in their business window.

Already, much effort has been made to reduce the use of plastic straws and coffee cups; and businesses have readily agreed to be refill stations for topping up water bottles, which will discourage the use of so many plastic bottles.

Amroth Community Council are extremely grateful to Welsh Government Leader funding; Planed; Valero; and to Saundersfoot Community Council for their financial support to enable the project to go ahead.

‘Bertie’ the sea bass is made of high quality stainless steel, built by local sculptor, Gideon Petersen.

Bertie is a community art sculpture and will be a focus for the Clean Seas message. He is packed with a colourful array of plastic bottles, and has solar lighting within, so that he will glow at night.

Bertie will be in Amroth for three months and will then move to Saundersfoot.

He will be available to visit other coastal communities from next year, if other Community Councils would like to host him.

AM Eluned Morgan will be unveiling the sculpture and we are encouraging visitors to take a selfie of themselves with Bertie and make his or her own personal pledge on how they will reduce plastic use in their lives.

The event will start at 12 noon and should last no longer than 30 minutes, and organisers hope that the public will go along to see the magnificent Bertie and make the unveiling very special.
