Watch the pure joy as passengers on a Tenby boat trip to Lundy encounter beautiful whales!
The boat, run by Tenby Boat Trips, left Tenby at 10am on June 15 in perfect conditions, a light warm breeze and calm seas.
Approximately 15 miles offshore they investigated a dorsal fin which turned out to be an adult Minke Whale.
Switching off the engines, they spent 30-40 minutes with three or four of these beautiful, fascinating and graceful cetaceans. The large adults remained 50m or so in the distance, huge arching backs part breaching.
“A juvenile was surfacing within meters of the boat, checking out the stunned, open mouthed funny looking creatures holding their little black boxes aloft; the whale might have thought the odd creatures above the water fed in a similar fashion to them. It was pure joy,” said a crew member.
Less than 10 minutes later, the boat’s inhabitants came across a huge pod of dolphin. They were coming from all angles to interact and ride the bow wave. A spectacular sight.
When the boat landed on Lundy, everyone was still high, blown away by the trip down. Passengers had five hours to explore the village and old lighthouse; most enjoyed a swim in the crystal clear water on a hot day, the Marisco Tavern serving up her usual delights.
They left at 5.30pm under the south side of the island and headed to Jenny’s cove, where huge numbers of auks including puffin could be found.
On the trip home, they saw a few Terns making the most of a lump of wood offshore, a few more dolphin encounters and a stunning sunset accompanied by shearwaters - an unforgettable day.
Another Lundy Island trip leaves Tenby Harbour tomorrow (Thursday, June 22). Contact Tenby Boat Trips on 07980 864 509 or visit the website.
