A proposal to introduce a new policy to replace any tree felled by the local authority with three new ones got the backing of senior councillors this week.

Pembrokeshire councty council Cabinet member Clr. Paul Miller had tabled a Notice of Motion calling on the county council to introduce a tree replacement policy with the “aim being that whenever, through the course of its activity, PCC or its contractors removes a tree (capital works / ash die back / general maintenance etc) that tree is replaced by three newly planted trees.”

External funding may be required to support the project, a report to cabinet on Monday, June 28 stated, as well as ‘bid for growth’s support potentially to be submitted of the 2022/23 budget exercise.

Clr. Jon Harvey said the policy was a “no brainer” with Clr. Phil Baker adding it would “enhance the environment and enhance the look of the county.”

He suggested that “local provenance trees” be favoured and innovative ways of to support the motion be developed.

Clr. Michelle Bateman said that a project in her ward had seen a “huge number of trees” planted on a local authority owned farm.

The recommendation the Notice of Motion be adopted was approved and that a three to one tree replacement policy aligned with the council’s net zero carbon action plan.
