One of Europe's largest cultural youth festivals, the Urdd National Eisteddfod, has received backing from the Port of Milford Haven to enable thousands of children to compete for a place in the prestigious event. The festival is a celebration of the Welsh language, culture and wealth of young talent that exists in Wales and this year will be staged in Pembrokeshire.

The Port has sponsored the 12 regional rounds, the 'Eisteddfodau Cylch' and 'Eisteddfodau Rhanbarth', which are currently taking place in schools and community venues across Pembrokeshire. Nationally, over 40,000 children and young people are competing in a range of events such as dance, arts and crafts, and instrumental contests in order to try and secure a place in the National Eisteddfod.

Some 100,000 people are expected to visit the main event at Cilwendeg, near Boncath, between May 27 and June 1, to enjoy the diverse range of performances and activities on offer. As well as the 1,800 seater pavilion, there will be over 200 colourful stalls and fun for all the family - from quad biking, climbing and sport sessions to a fun fair, live bands and celebrity children's shows.

"As a Trust Port, the Port of Milford Haven is committed to creating opportunities for the community to participate in diverse projects and events. The Urdd National Eisteddfod has a long, rich history of showcasing the talents of children and young people, and the Port is proud to be associated with this event," said Mark Andrews, corporate affairs director for the Port of Milford Haven.

Aled Sion, director of the Eisteddfod, said: "We are extremely grateful to the Port of Milford Haven for this sponsorship and their support for the Urdd Eisteddfod. Pembrokeshire is a beautiful area and we very much look forward to bringing our National Eisteddfod to the county at the end of May."
