LATEST Statistics released by the Welsh Government show an increase in children living in temporary accommodation, along with the number of rough sleepers also rising.

Commenting Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing, Janet Finch Saunders MS said:

“The latest statistics on homelessness are not good reading for Labour’s record here in Wales, and continues to show their neglect for the people of Wales. Over 3,000 dependent children in temporary accommodation is heart-breaking news, Labour must do more to assist the most vulnerable in our society. 

“Along with this, the number of individuals rough sleeping in Wales has hit its second highest level since 2020 at 152. 

“The Labour Government in Wales can put on a show of compassion in the Senedd about individuals crossing the channel in small boats, but with over 3,000 vulnerable children in Wales being let down, it’s time for Labour to revaluate their priorities.”

In February 2023, the number of dependent children in temporary accommodation reached over 3,000 for the first time. The current figure of 3,001 is a 45% increase since February 2022 and a 134% increase since February 2021.

The number of individuals rough sleeping has hit its second highest level since 2020 at 152. In February 2022, the level was 77 – an increase of 97%.

Newport is also experiencing high levels of rough sleeping growth. In February 2022, there were 8 rough sleepers. In February 2023, there are 49. That’s a 513% increase in a year.
