Tenby Town Crier Jim Cornwell has raised a total of £2,000 towards improving the Jubilee Skate Park by running Reading Half Marathon earlier this year.
“With two skate boards on my back and at 73 years of age it was always going to be a tough task,” he said.
Tenby Jubilee Play and Skate Park Association was established last year following an initiative by the Deputy Mayor, Clr. Christine Brown, who received requests from the local children to have the skate park improved, decided something had to be done.
She took up the challenge with support from the Town Council and formed a Committee of which Jim is the treasurer.
The funds will go towards helping to improve the existing skate park.
“Local business people and Tenby townsfolk were very generous, plus I received support from the Barclays Bank Community Match Funding Scheme which helped me achieve this final figure,” he continued.
Jim wanted to thank the following who kindly sponsored him - Taormina B&B, T.P.Hughes, Tenby Harbwr Brewery, and members of Tenby Male Choir.
“My daughter Helen ran the Reading Half Marathon with me and also had a skateboard on her back.
“She was really helpful in getting me round and giving me encouragement to complete the 13 mile course in 2 hours and 54 minutes, which wasn’t bad considering the weight I was carrying!”
“I am delighted to be involved in any scheme that will bring benefit and improve the outdoor activities for local children,” added Jim.
