Narberth Food Festival is the place to 'bee' for around 100 local schoolchildren today (Friday).

The youngsters are looking forward to enjoying a day of food-related activities based on the festival's 2013 theme of herbs and honey during the popular event's education day.

This year, pupils from Narberth, Tavernspite and Wiston schools, together with hearing-impaired children from Carmarthenshire, will be having their own talks, demonstrations, tastings and hands-on fun.

They'll be learning about ice-cream making, growing their own herbs, finding out how bees make honey and creating decorations for the festival marquee.

Said Narberth CP School headteacher, Edna Davies: "We have been very fortunate for many years now to have been able to take part in the education day organised by Narberth Food Festival.

"Year 6 pupils spent the day learning different information about food. They thoroughly enjoy the experience, and we are very grateful to the committee for inviting us."

The children with hearing loss come to the festival thanks to the National Deaf Children's Society, and Saturday's cookery demonstrations will all be British Sign Language-interpreted.

The event's food theatre and talks and taste venue are both equipped with hearing loops, and the festival's facility for the hearing-impaired helped it towards the silver award it won at the Pembrokeshire Tourism Awards for best access for the disabled visitor.

Said festival chairman Huw Jones: "Part of our ethos is that we are a caring event, inclusive to everybody, and so it's great to have recognition of our accessibility for the disabled - particularly the signing we provide which adds to our facilities for the hearing-impaired."

The festival has also struck gold in the best event category of the awards.

Narberth Food Festival takes place on Saturday from 10 am - 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am - 4 pm. For more information, visit http://www.narberthfoodfestival.com">www.narberthfoodfestival.com
