As Costain Ltd., continues work on the A40 Penblewin to Slebech Park Improvement for the Welsh Assembly Government, plans are well advanced for the delivery of the key elements of the new crossing of the Eastern Cleddau river, adjacent to the junction of the A4075 and the A40, near Canaston Bridge.
On Monday, September 7, a 500-tonne capacity crane will be installed at the 'lift site' alongside the existing bridge.
During the following three days, a total of six, 38-metre long steel beams will be transported from the fabrication yard at Chepstow to the site and lifted into position.
The beams will be brought along the M4, A48 and A40 under escort and, whilst not wider than a standard lorry, they will create a 45-metre long vehicle.
The Costain team has been involved in advanced detailed planning with all those likely to be affected by the installation works and have received much praise in the manner in which they have approved the project in general and indeed this operation.
All efforts are being made to ensure that the movement of the beams causes as little disruption as possible to the travelling public. The wagons are not likely to be slow moving, but are abnormal in length and the project team asks for the understanding of the other road users during such a complex operation.
There will be some disruption to traffic at the A4075 junction whilst the wagons manoeuvre into the 'lift site', but Costain will endeavour to keep this to a minimum and are discussing with Dyfed Powys Police, South Wales Trunk Road Agency and Pembrokeshire County Council, how best to control the traffic during this operation.
