A loyal local Cancer Research fundraiser is looking for sponsorship to continue her charity cake baking initiative for Christmas.
Maureen Lower MBE of Park Avenue, Kilgetty has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for over 25 years.
Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and was awarded the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2003 for her volunteering work, and the German Medal of Merit, is hoping that a sponsor might come forward so that she can purchase the ingredients needed to make around 125 to 150 Christmas cakes - with sales of the items all going towards Cancer Research UK.
Following last year’s successful festive fundraising bake-off, Maureen raised a total of £870 to be split equally between Cancer Research UK and Tenovus after making 125 cakes.
“I took and sold 46 of the cakes to my regular customers in Berlin, and the rest in Pembrokeshire...I only had one left!” said Maureen.
The most cakes she has made in one year is 150 cakes using approximately 35kg of flour, 42kg mixed fruit, 360 eggs and 22kg of brown sugar!
“The cakes are bursting with moist fruit, dripping with light brown sugar and butter, generously coated with marzipan and icing, and traditional Christmas decorations, to make it an ideal Christmas present,” she explained.
“I ‘m happy to shop for the ingredients and marizipan, icing etc, and then sell the cakes for charity, but I ideally need people or an organisation to come foward as soon as possible for sponsorship, so I can start baking.
“I have done it locally for the past three years, with help from local supermarkets, businesses and individuals, and have a lot of regular customers who are very complimentary about the cakes and happy to buy them for such a worthy cause, so hopefuly I can continue that this year, with a little help,” she added.
