Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society has a change to its usual venue on February 4. The society’s next event will not take place in the Town Hall but in Pembroke’s two churches where a really interesting talk is planned.

Assemble in Monkton Priory Church at 10.30am to meet Dr Martin Crampin, who is travelling down from Aberystwyth to talk about the stained glass of Pembroke. Then the party will make its way - either riding or walking - to St Mary’s Church where refreshments will be served from 11am and where the talk will continue afterwards. Everyone is welcome - there is no charge, although a donation to church funds would be appreciated.

Martin Crampin is an artist, photographer and designer based in Aberystwyth, where he is a Research Fellow at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies.

Martin has been researching ecclesiastical art in Wales for around twenty years, and has contributed to a series of research projects exploring aspects of visual culture in Wales and the place of the saints in Wales. His acclaimed ‘Stained Glass from Welsh Churches’ was published in 2014 and his ‘Welsh Saints from Welsh Churches’ will be available in early 2023.

Since 2019 he has been involved in the ‘Ports Past and Present’ project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Co-operation Programme. The project has been exploring the culture and histories of the five port towns linking Wales and Ireland.
