You might be planning an exotic summer holiday, or a staycation nearer to home, but the team at the Torch Theatre is preparing for its ever-popular Summer Schools which are guaranteed to fill your August with exciting activities and memories to last a lifetime.

Over the years, the Torch has gained a reputation for providing exceptional summer holiday activities for children and young people. Now, with its Adult School, the Torch caters for everyone, aged seven and over.

Tim Howe, Senior Manager Youth and Community at the Torch, creates and runs the Summer Schools:

“Come and join the fun-packed creative sessions which include performing in our studio theatre for family and friends. We’ve got opportunities for adults and children to get inspired and to be artistic. With danger in the land of make believe, putting on a play in a week, and a whole range of writing, performing and direction skills being explored, we know there’s something for everyone!

“Led by professionals with world-wide reputations and training at the top drama schools, our summer schools are open to everyone. There’s no audition necessary and you don’t even have to have any previous experience. We aim to make reasonable adjustments to our delivery to ensure that each activity provides the best fit for everyone, so that you can make the most of your experiences.”

The Summer Schools comprise the following:

Dramatic Detectives for Year 3 to Year 6 (ages 7 – 11) –

A series of strange crimes have been taking place in the land of make believe. But what are they, who’s been breaking the law, and will we be able to stop them in time? Through creative play and storytelling, the children taking part will help answer all these questions and more. Sessions are run daily from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, August 4- 8.

Playmakers for Year 7 to Year 13 (ages 11-18) –

Are you up for the challenge of learning a play in a week? Join the Torch as they rehearse and perform a contemporary play written specifically for young people. Participants will get involved in all the creative decisions - casting, costumes, props and music! ‘Playmakers’ is the senior summer school for ages 11-18, running from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday August 11-15.

Show off! Ages 18+

A total novice or want to brush up on your writing, performing and direction skills? Why not join our adult summer school. Weekly evening sessions conclude with a showcase performance in our studio theatre. No experience necessary. Sessions are from 6.30pm to 9pm, Thursdays August 7, 14, 21 and 28. Showcase performance Saturday, August 30.
