After the summer break, Narberth Jazz welcomed back to the Plas Hyfryd Dale Storr, a piano player whose skills and knowledge brought alive the music of New Orleans.
That ‘Crescent City’ brought us Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Prima, Fats Domino, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Junior.
Dale concentrated on the music of the piano players originating from New Orleans. These included Professor Long Hair (Roy Byrd), Alan Toussaint and so on.
Amongst the renditions performed were ‘Joan’, ‘Dorothy’ by Dr John; a James Booker selection including ‘A Taste of Honey’; together with some standards in the New Orleans style such as ‘I’ll be seeing you’, ‘Pretty and Lovely’, ‘Sunny side of the street’ and one for Narberth Jazz president Declan, ‘Good Night Irene’.
This virtuoso and talented New Orleans pianist and storyteller was fully appreciated by an attentive audience. His music superbly reflected both the spirit and the styles of their composers.
Narberth Jazz’s next event will be on Thursday, October 17 with award-winning saxophonist Alan Barnes accompanied by the John Gibbon trio. Visit www.narberthjazz.wales .
