Teachers and students from Lesotho have been enjoying spending time in Wales as part of the Dolen Cymru 'Connecting Classrooms' scheme. Two teachers and a pupil from Pokane High School have been visiting their partner school, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland, with whom they have formed a strong link since being paired together in 2008. Teachers from both schools have hosted each other in their home countries and for the first time this year, a pupil from Pokane has also been visiting. Katleho Lesoma has relished the opportunity to learn from his Welsh peers and has been both awed and puzzled by what he has experienced. He has been welcomed by the pupils at Dyffryn Taf and it seems that teenagers from Wales are no different from those in Lesotho! He has spent time in the classroom and has been sharing his culture and way of life with pupils at the school. On Wednesday, a traditional Mokete was held for the visitors, a cultural celebration from Lesotho which is similar to a Welsh Eisteddfod. As part of the programme, Katleho performed alongside the A Level drama group from Dyffryn Taf in a dramatic presentation based on the theme 'I Have a Dream'. Teachers from the school undertook the same performance project with pupils in Pokane when they visited Lesotho in February. Katleho's ambition is to have a career as an actor or as a television presenter and so he enjoyed the experience. "We do not have drama lessons in school in Lesotho and so I enjoyed working with the students and of course performing for the Welsh schools and my Basotho friends at the Mokete," he said. Katleho and the teachers have also been to observe other classes which are not part of the curriculum in Lesotho such as PE, Food Technology and ICT. They became rounders coaches for the day and taught pupils at the school how to cook traditional bread in a saucepan! Pupils at the school have enjoyed their company and hearing about life and education in Lesotho. The week has been a great success, with old friendships renewed and new ones made. Next year celebrates 30 years of 'Dolen Cymru' and it is hoped that the partnership between Wales and Lesotho will continue for many years to come.
