Five years as a Fairtrade school has been celebrated by Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in fitting style.

The school in Whitland marked the occasion by inviting 25 local supporters to a three-course Fairtrade Lunch which was cooked and served by eight youngsters studying hospitality for BTecs in hospitality.

Elizabeth Thomas, Fairtrade co-ordinator at the school, said: "We were the first school in Carmarthenshire to win this status and have retained it for over five years.

"We do a lot on sustainable citizenship which makes the students aware of their impact as consumers and encourages them to think about what they are buying and where it comes from."

Headteacher Dr. Newsome said: "As a school we are extremely proud of what our students can achieve and we take pride in nurturing students that are not only able to contribute to the local economy, but also have the required skills to adapt as citizens of an ever-growing interconnected, globalised economy."

Guest MP Simon Hart added: "This is a wonderful achievement by Ysgol Dyffryn Taf and I was honoured to join them in their celebrations at the Hywel Dda Centre.

"It was a fantastic meal and was all the better for using Fairtrade ingredients served by polite and welcoming students from the school."
