The cost of cremating a loved one in Pembrokeshire is likely to rise, but public views will be sought first.

The council’s cabinet was told on Monday (September 10) that charges at Parc Gwyn crematorium, Narberth, are below the Welsh average and ‘substantially lower than the nearest alternative private facilities in Llanelli.’

Clr. Cris Tomos, cabinet member for environment and Welsh language, said there was no limit on what could be charged for crematorium use and the service could be used to generate income.

Cabinet heard that the cost of a cremation in Pembrokeshire was £581, compared to £754 in Llanelli, £665 in Swansea and £835 in Aberystwyth.

Clr. Bob Kilmister urged the public to “let us know your views if you have them” as the rise could cause financial problems for some people and safety nets will need to be put in place.

Clr. Tessa Hodgson also added that people had no alternative options for cremation in the county.

A recommendation to hold a public consultation on two options for the service was approved.

The options are to increase the charges to match Llanelli or to the Welsh average of £691.50.

The increases would result in an increased income of £123,000 and £182,500 respectively.

A inflation price rise will be made in October with the more significant increase due next April.
