Pembroke Town Council need more information before committing to funding the library for another five years.
The councillors’ view was stated at the October meeting following correspondence received from Mike Cavanagh, Head of Cultural, Leisure, Tourism and Registration Services at Pembrokeshire County Council, with regard to funding the library for another five years, after the current agreement to 2026.
The council expressed their concerns raised over uncertainties which have not been addressed. Whilst sympathetic to Pembrokeshire County Council’s position, and wishing the library to continue, Pembroke councillors raised concerns over committing to another £125,000 (five years at £25,000) until further information is forthcoming.
In order to exercise due diligence, it was stated, Council cannot commit at the present time without knowing confirmed opening times, and before expenditure such as rent and detailed costs as a whole to run the library, are put in place.
Following a discussion, it was resolved for the Clerk to reply to Mr Cavanagh that the council appreciates that decisions by the Cabinet are awaited, probably involving budget cuts. Once that information is decided and a more accurate budget can be predicted, Council will be in a better position to discuss future funding requirements.
