People flocked to Pembrokeshire’s seaside hotspots over the Bank Holiday weekend, with Monday being the hottest day of the year so far.

After the wettest May in Wales on record for 160 years, visitors and locals alike were keen to soak up the sun and head to the beach and coast, with places such as Tenby and Saundersfoot, particularly popular.

Unsurprisingly there were big traffic queues into the county, with council car parks at capacity in most coastal areas on both Sunday and Monday.

Pembrokeshire’s award-winning Blue Flag beaches were the busiest they’ve been in some time, with one person commenting on social media on Tenby’s beaches looking so packed - “Wonderful to see - reminds me of the 60s!”

The Health Minister, Eluned Morgan recently encouraged people to holiday in Wales and explore its beauty this summer as the fight against Covid continues.

“I know people are looking forward to a holiday after the year we have all had, but this is the year to holiday at home and enjoy everything Wales has to offer,” she said.

“I would encourage people to support local businesses in particular in the tourism and hospitality sector which have been hard hit by the pandemic.

“Travelling overseas is definitely not the same as it was before the pandemic – everyone will need to take a test before they leave and when they return and some people will need to quarantine on their return to the UK.

“We’ve all worked really hard to bring coronavirus under control in Wales; we need to do everything we can to prevent coronavirus from being re-imported into Wales from travel. Our strong advice is to only travel overseas if it is essential.”

Pembrokeshire County Council leader, Clr. David Simpson urged everyone to play their part in the Covid recovery process across the county.

“If everyone works together Pembrokeshire will once again prosper and we can all enjoy our beautiful county,” he commented.

“I also want to urge everyone to continue to take pride in our county, as I do.

“We are very fortunate to live in Pembrokeshire and visitors are envious of what we have.

“This year we are expecting more visitors and greater pressures on our services, like our litter team.

“I would like to request your support in ensuring Pembrokeshire stays as we all love it – clean, tidy and safe. Please support us in the recovery; explore the outdoors if you are able, and enjoy Pembrokeshire safely.”
